Sewing 101: Intro to Home Sewing

Tickets for this Event are Sold Out

If you are interested in learning how to sew, then this is the perfect place to start! This class will take you through the process of constructing a simple tote bag from start to finish. You will learn the basic techniques needed to begin sewing your own projects, become familiar with the machines and tools we have available in the workshop, and learn how to use them properly.

We will be using the home sewing machines, which are perfect for most projects and require no certification to use. If you do not have previous sewing experience and are interested in using the industrial machines for more heavy-duty projects, it is highly recommended that you take this class prior to getting your industrial certification.

Topics covered in this class include:

  • Choosing the correct tools and materials for your project
  • Measuring and cutting your pattern
  • Finishing fabric edges with the serger
  • Parts of the machine and how to operate them
  • Troubleshooting common issues
  • Basic techniques for sewing seams, hemlines, and handles

All necessary materials will be provided, however you may bring your own fabric if you prefer. If you do, you will need a roughly 32 x 23 inch piece of fabric - enough for one 32 x 15 inch rectangle for the bag, and two 3 x 28 inch strips for the handles. You will want to choose a fabric that is sturdy but not too thick, such as a lightweight canvas. If you are unsure of your fabric choice please message the instructor for assistance.

The fee for this class is $60 for non-members and $45 for members.
